TMJ FAQS

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint and TMD stands for temporomandibular disorder. The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull and is responsible for the movement of the jaw. TMD is a group of disorders affecting the temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles. TMD can cause pain, discomfort, and limited movement of the jaw.

What are the symptoms of TMJ/TMD?

The symptoms of TMJ/TMD can vary but may include:

• Pain or discomfort in the jaw, face, neck, and shoulders
• Limited movement or locking of the jaw
• Clicking or popping sound when opening the mouth
• Headaches or migraines
• Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
• Shoulder pain
• Dizziness
• Facial swelling
• Toothache-like pain
• Difficulty opening or closing the mouth

A doctor can diagnose TMJ/TMD through a physical examination, medical history review, and possibly imaging tests such as X-rays.

The exact cause of TMJ/TMD is not always clear, but it can be triggered by various factors such as:

• Jaw injury
• Stress
• Arthritis
• Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism)
• Misaligned teeth or bite (malocclusion)
• Dental procedures
• Connective tissue disorders
• Tooth loss
• Jaw muscle fatigue

TMJ does not always require surgery. In many cases, it can be treated with non-surgical methods such as physical therapy, stress management, pain medication, lifestyle changes, oral splints or guards, or injections. Surgery may be recommended in severe cases, but it depends on the individual case and the severity of the TMJ.

Botox treatment for TMJ is very safe and approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) for TMJ treatment.

Typical relief is found to last 3 -6 months, though some patients experience longer or even permanent success.

Several of the larger, deeper muscles require a minimum of 10 units of Botox but may need up to 20-30 units depending on the size of the muscle.  Additional muscles may require as little as only 2-3 units.

TMJ/TMD treatments often overlap with areas targeted for cosmetic enhancement.  A customized treatment is designed based on your specific wants and needs.

It’s not common for dental insurance to provide coverage for TMJ diagnosis or treatment. However, medical insurance may partially cover the cost of your care. To get a clear understanding of your insurance coverage, it is recommended to consult with your dentist before undergoing any treatment.
